Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a blindness-causing eye condition for which there is no cure, but there are things people should keep in mind if they want to reduce their risks of getting macular degeneration, reported The Palm Beach Post.

According to the article, Dr. Monroe Benaim, an ophthalmologist, shared with readers a few tips that can help them to keep their eyes healthy. Dr. Benaim said that one of the best ways to avoid  and other eye ailments is to consume foods that are known to benefit the eyes. For example, leafy green vegetables, fruits and seafood containing loads of omega-3 fatty acids will help in the fight against eye disease.

According to the article, Dr. Benaim added that people should, in order to avoid damaging their eyes, avoid staring directly at either the sun or other lights that are excessively bright. On a related note, people should get used to using protective eyewear when necessary. Protective eyewear, as it turns out, should be used to protect the eyes in the event of activities such as garden work, athletic events or hobbies.

According to the article, Dr. Benaim added that people need to get an annual eye examination so that they can keep on top of their eye health. Diagnosing AMD and other eye issues early is important because the sooner they’re caught, the sooner eye doctors can pursue treatment. As concerns AMD, there are treatments that can slow down progression, so the sooner it id diagnosed, the better.

According to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, AMD is the primary cause of vision loss for people in the United States who are 55 years old and over. In fact, the organization added that there are over 10 million people in the country who are living with the condition. And research suggests that there will be plenty more AMD cases down the road not only in the U.S., but also around the world. Recent research shows that the population of people in the U.S. older than 65 years old will, but 2025, be six times more than it was in 1990. The higher senior population will translate into more AMD cases.
