(http://www.PreserveMacForte.com) A founding member of the International Academy of Low Vision Specialists has authored a book designed to educate people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) or other low vision issues, according to a press release.

The press release indicated that Connecticut optometrist Dr. Randolph C. Kinkade has written the Guide for Macular Degeneration Eyeclasses: Low Vision Treatment as a way to inform people and their eye physicians about cutting-edge ways to see more clearly with AMD and low vision.

According to the press release, there is no cure for AMD, an eye ailment that adversely impacts the macula, the portion of the retina responsible for central vision. AMD is the foremost cause of irreversible vision impairment and low vision in the elderly. The press release added that the term low vision is used to define vision loss that can’t be fixed using regular eye glasses, medication of surgery.

The guide provides details on age-related macular degeneration, low vision treatment and how magnification can help people living with AMD. The book covers advanced optic eyeglasses. It is presented in a large print, high contrast format and includes several pictures of people wearing their low vision glasses.

According to the press release, Dr. Kinkade said that there are quite a few patients that he sees who ask him why their doctors did not recommend the special glasses his book discusses. “They are frustrated with their reduced level of vision and how it has hindered what they want to see and do,” he said. He added the following: “No pair of eyeglasses can eliminate developing blind spots created by macular degeneration, but they do make things larger,  giving you a better chance of seeing and reading.”

According to the press release, people with low vision can, for assistance with reading and writing, use Spectacle Miniature Telescopes, Prismatic Magnifying Spectacles and ClearImage II Reading Microscopes. Devices such as the aforementioned provide greater magnification than do traditional glasses, which can make it easier to read. The doctor, however, added that higher magnification won’t translate into problem-free reading and writing.
